James 1:12, New International Version

“Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.”

So often we want things now and don't want to wait or endure the pain of waiting or going through it. But endurance is actually a good thing and develops precious fruit in our spiritual lives.

Spiritual endurance is the ability to remain strong and faithful, especially during difficult times. It is important in the Christian life because it allows people to follow Christ, respond with faith, and walk the path to the end. The Bible mentions endurance in several places, including James 1:12, Isaiah 40:31, and Hebrews 10:35-36. Some say that endurance is key to getting through trials without wavering or compromising, and that it is necessary to receive what God has promised.

Our heavenly Father wants to give us the gift of endurance, it is one of the most precious, loving gifts we can receive from Him. But how is endurance gained? You may know the answer: pain. There’s no way around it. We get every form of increased stamina only by the discipline of forcing ourselves (or being forced) to push beyond our current limits and persevere through an arduous, sometimes agonizing, experience of discomfort. So, what package should we expect God’s loving gift of endurance to arrive in? One that “seems painful rather than pleasant” (Hebrews 12:11): a season of discipline.

If the Lord left us in a comfortable state, we would never change. We would stay where we are, because, well, we are comfortable. God desires so much more than that for us and that's why sometimes we have to go through so uncomfortable things and learn to push and endure through it.

So, how do we produce endurance?

When circumstances and difficulties occur in our life, instead of complaining, we are to accept the discipline it offers and be strengthened through it. During those times, God has provided the resources we need to “push through.”

The first is God’s Word. We are called to act on the truth that has been revealed in Scripture concerning spiritual endurance.

Our spiritual endurance is predicated on the fact that God has given us everything we need to live in this present age. (2 Peter 1:3-4)

We can be assured that God will give us the strength to endure trying times based on His faithfulness of His Word.

The second is the Holy Spirit. It is the Holy Spirit who is there to strengthen and keep us. With His assistance we are able to do all things. (Philippians 4:13)

Through God’s Word and the Holy Spirit, we, as believers are able to build spiritual endurance and endure whatever comes our way!
